General

In our view tavelling by car remains one of the best ways of seeing the UK, probably for all visits except for stays in London or other major cities where public transport options are probably the easiest and quickest way to get around. For more complex iteneraries it can be better to mix car hire with other transport for example, using short-haul air carriers to fly between London and Scotland and then arranging a car from the airport. Using the National Rail network may also be a useful option for some journeys. Our job is to both help and advise and to bring all this together for you.

Why Europcar?

For car hire there are many reasons why we now only recommend and work with Europcar but the key points are:

  • Most operators either operate from expensive 'on-airport' locations (resulting in higher rates) or offer lower rates from usually less convenient 'off-airport' locations. Europcar offer both options.
  • Europcar offer a low-cost collection/delivery service. This means it may often be more cost-effective and convenient for us to arrange you a private taxi transfer to your hotel from your arrival airport (see options on our accommodation pages) and then to have a car delivered, maybe next morning, from one of Europcar's off-airport locations.
  • Europcar provide us with inclusive prices, so there are no surprise extra charges at the end of the booking process often associated with so called 'low-cost' rental operators.
  • Europcar has around 130 locations across the UK to support all of your car-hire requirements.
  • During your hire period Europcar provide a 24 hour help-line and can quickly provide replacement vehicles from their UK location network if required.
  • 7 days notice (and often even less!) is all we need to source any grade of vehicle offered.

UK Rail Network

Train picture For longer journeys or for travelling in and out of London and other major cities, consider using the rail network. Full details are available here: National Rail Enquiries.

It is often better to book longer journeys (more than about 2 hours) in advance to secure seats and to take advantage of attractive advanced booking prices.

UK Domestic Air Travel

There are a large number of scheduled air carriers operating domestic routes in the UK, however we recommed focussing on the more established operators including the following:

British Airways
(and its franchises)
Easyjet HyperLink
British Midland
Flybe

Help with Booking UK Transport

Once you have researched your journey we will be pleased to book it for you and ensure your tickets are safely delivered anywhere in the UK, such as to your hotel manager. We make a small administration charge of £20 per booking (of up to four passengers) for this service - usually far less than savings made by advance booking fares. Please simply add your requirements as special requests to your itinerary and we will supply you with a quotation before booking these for you. Please note this service is only available alongside an itinerary booking with Holiday in Britain.
